Avatar: Fire and Ash U.S. Box Office Performance

In the United States and Canada, the movie earned $88 million. This was on the lower side of expectations. Still, experts say this is not very worrying. The earlier Avatar movies also opened slow before Christmas and later earned huge money during holidays.
The movie is expected to grow strongly in the coming days. During year end holidays, movies can earn five or six times more than opening weekend. Disney believes the film can recover and perform very well over time.

Audience Reaction Is Strong

Viewers are liking the movie. It received an A CinemaScore, same as the earlier Avatar films. PostTrak exit scores are also very strong at 4 out of 5. This is positive news even though the movie is very long at more than 3 hours.

Avatar History Shows Long Runs

The first Avatar movie opened with just $77 million in 2009. Many people doubted it then. Later, it became the highest-grossing movie ever with $2.97 billion worldwide. Avatar: The Way of Water and Titanic also earned over $2.3 billion each.

Strong Overseas and IMAX Business

Avatar movies always do well outside the U.S. This time also, overseas response is strong. IMAX alone earned $43.6 million, making it IMAX’s biggest opening weekend of the year. Premium formats like IMAX and 3D made up 56 percent of total ticket sales.

China and Asia Lead Markets

China performed very well for Fire and Ash. It earned $57.6 million there, making China the top market. South Korea and other Asian countries also showed strong numbers. This shows global audiences still love Avatar movies.

Competition From Other Films

Some other movies affected Avatar’s performance. The faith-based movie David opened in second place with $22 million and received an A CinemaScore. Lionsgate’s thriller The Housemaid earned $19 million and came in third place.

Even with a slower U.S. start, Avatar: Fire and Ash is far from finished. Strong audience response, holiday season, and overseas markets give the film a good chance to become another long-running box office success.
